Dealing with Sin

Download here

Dealing with sin in a believer’s life is a command Col 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: . After we are saved from sin, it is unthinkable for a believer to continue in sin. Yet, sin and the flesh are such strong enemies of the Christian and the Christian life, there needs to be a deliberate attempt to deal with sin. This resource was a Sunday School lesson that was written up and it is hoped that some believer struggling with sin, will be helped by this.

Dealing with Sin

Memory Verse

1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

The Process Of Sin

James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

  • Lust: an eager wanting of something that cannot be controlled, usually of items we are not supposed to have
  • Tempted : fall into sin
  • Drawn away: pulled away
  • Everyone falls into sin when he is led away by his own lust (wanting things that he should not have) and gets trapped by it (enticed)

Lust (an eager wanting of things that we are not supposed to have, or not time yet)  è drawn away by it (led by the nose) è enticed (fully persuaded, usually by reason or promises of fun, pleasure, profit, gain) è tempted ( makes a decision, therefore falling into sin)

The aftermath:

Lust conceives sin è sin has a process (finished – completed, ended) When uninterrupted, it will lead to death.  From the decision to sin, indulging in it, we become used to it and then begin to reason why it is

Sin

1 John 3:4  Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Summary thought on the process of sin:

Alice knew it was not right to have the $50 she saw on the dresser table in her mum’s room. But she wanted the new dress (LUST) for the birthday party that was coming next week at her friend’s place. She felt it was ok since mother loves her and always want to give her the best and what she wants. So it should be OK to take it first and then if mum asked, she will explain later (DRAWN AWAY BY IT and ENTICED) This desire led her to make plans (CONCEIVED – TEMPTED – SIN) for taking the money and how she will react when mother asked her if she has seen the money. At this juncture, sin has already started. And if uninterrupted, it will bring forth death. The bible cites the worst case scenario but there will always be the consequences of sin. For Alice, it may be death to her reputation as the other siblings will call her a thief when found out. And if the mum does not know now, or have overlooked the money, she may feel that it is OK to do it again and finally she will be caught.

The above case shows the progress of sin and in my experience of helping others and even dealing with myself, understanding the process helps me to keep my heart tender as I become keenly aware of the presence of sin and its sinister effects. So how do we deal with sin?

OVERCOMING THE SIN OF COMMISSION

Romans 14:23  And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

  1. Surrender / Submit To GOD First

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

  • When we submit to the Lord, we are under the protection and leading of GOD, and a man who fears the Lord, GOD protects (Psalm 34:7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.)
  • When we do not submit to the Lord, or surrender to Him at the onset, we are always going to fall

James 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

E.g: Daniel 1:8   purposed (stedfast, decided)

Action: Submit your heart and mind to GOD

  1. Prevent The Temptation
  • Flee temptation 2 Timothy 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. / Proverbs 4:14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
  • Pray that ye enter not into temptation Mark 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. (1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.)
  • Understand the wiles of the devil 2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. /
  • Be careful of your friends 1 Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. / Psalm 119:63  I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.
  1. Learn To Say No To Sin

Proverbs 1:10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

Exodus 23:2  Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:

  1. Fight It In Your Mind

2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

  • Cast down: has the idea of destroying it, crashing it, breaking it
  • Imagination: reasoning, thought
  • High thing: an idol, something that is fighting against what you know is right
  • Bringing into captivity ( lure it towards )
  • The obedience of Christ (towards how Christ will obey God)
  • Say yes to the escape given

Matt 4

  • Be filled with the Spirit
  • Memorise the word
  • Use the word of GOD
  1. Decide To Do Right / Obey The Right

Matthew 6:33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. / Deuteronomy 6:18  And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers,

  1. Thank God For The Victory

Romans 7:24-25  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

  1. Keep Vigilant For The Next Temptation

1 Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: / Luke 4:13  And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

Memory verse

Deuteronomy 6:18  And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers,

OVERCOMING THE SIN OF OMISSION

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

(expound the context of James 4)

When we know what is right and we do not do it, it is sin (the sin of omission)

What about if I do not know, then I do wrong then it is not wrong what?

Numbers 15:28 And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the LORD, to make an atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him.

1. Learn To Submit To The Lord Jesus In Everything

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey…

Romans 12:1 – 2

When you see yourself belonging to God and His will, you will strive to follow Him and His ways. However, when you have never come to that place of surrender, you will always vacillate between the two / Judges 2:18-19  And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way. (did not submit to the Lord)

Ref: 1 Cor 6:19 – 20

2. Know And Learn What Is Right

Deut 31:12 Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:

Ezekiel 44:23 And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.

Deut 17:13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously.

Romans 3:20  Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

 3. Obey What Is Right

Romans 13:1-2  Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
