Why Jesus?
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Matthew 1:21
The Lord Jesus was born in a supernatural way. His birth was the hope of the nation of Israel, the fulfilment of more than 300 specific prophecies. His birth was supernatural in that He was born of a virgin. Ridiculous to many, but the power of God to those who has placed faith in the true God of Creation. The manger was no reflection of the Royalty that He was.
The earthly, and humble parents of Christ was no reflection of the Character of this High King. The visitors at His birth, the lowly shepherds, the pagan Magi from afar was a true reflection of who the King welcomes into His Kingdom. The proud Herod, the cruel Soldiers and the faithless wise men who indicated from the Old Testament that the Lord Jesus would be born in Bethlehem, will have no part in the Kingdom of God.
But why must Christ be born? The scripture tells us that He will save His people from their sins. What is so serious about sin that it required the death of the Son of God? The King of kings and the Lord of lords?
Sin, defined by the bible is the breaking of the law of God (1 John 3:4). Sin corrupts the personality of every individual that comes into this world. Psalm 51:5 tells us that we are born in sin. Because of the fall of man, every man born into this world has a sin nature. This sin nature IS the motivation for our every thought, action and desire.
This sinful nature drives our outlook in life, our interactions and our private world. It not only drives us, but dominates us. The bible tells us this sin enslaves us. We are not able to break out of this enslavement. As a result, we are doomed to corruption. Our character, personality are corrupted and corrupting as we live on earth.
Sin darkens our character, it corrupts us from inside. It leads us to pride, speak lies to cover up our deeds, covet others’ property and break our promises. Sin sees others worse than ourselves, and esteems self above the other. It aims to put down another person for personal glorification.
Sin destroys relationships. Because of pride, selfishness, and envy, the sinful self puts others out of the circle, ostracizes others from meaningful relationships. Families are broken up, friendships turn sour, communities become disconnected and churches tear apart. Sin destroys relationships. God has ordained meaningful, beautiful interactions that will edify, encourage and exhort each other. But sin tore our first parents’ relationship apart, and continues to do so today.
Sin brings eternal ruin. “For the wages of sin is death…” Romans 6:23. This is eternal separation from God. There is a permanent, eternal broken irreparable relationship with God. Sin also brings about eternal punishment. “this shall go away into everlasting punishment…” Matt 25:46.
Forever and eternity are time frames that the human mind can never fully understand, yet the bible tells us that sin brings about a punishment that is forever.
The birth of Christ was to purify our personality by giving us a new nature. 2 Corinthians 5:17. The Lord Jesus grants us His grace and strength, to speak kindly, and to be helpful and in essence, establish and build relationships and because His precious blood cleanses us from ALL sin, we are set free by the power of God from sin, and then when we sleep in death, we are set free eternally from the presence of sin as we go into the bosom of our God.
Why Jesus? Because He is our Saviour, our personal Saviour. Is He yours today?
